http://store.steampo....com/app/42890/ its not MoO of course but its what youre looking for. Turn based overgame with the choice of tactical or autoplay minigame (for lack of a better term) when combat occurs
mind you it came out in 2003 so the graphics are a little dated
Im not saying play that instead of this, cause I jusat got this yesterday and im still having fun with my friend who also bought it, but if this flaw is keeping you from tyhis game, theres an alternative you there. and that steam link is for the main game plus three or four expansions for ten bucks

Well it never really was alive. Game was basically released in a half finished state. If they finally introduce the multiplayer tactical combat (and do a decent job with it) I'm sure the number of multiplayer games would surge nicely.

Thats rather depressingly common in these kinds of games actually. Thats what almost killed the Kerberos company actually

arguably, that was 6 years ago but they released the game in such a way that it was actually unable to be played or even opened at all because the game was that broken. And arguably they spent like the next 4 years fixing it for free but when they tried to sell the rest of the fixes as an expansion it was a real kick in the teeth, and they eventually released it for free. But all the goodwill from the original game was completely vaporized in the wake of that disaster

It took them two YEARS just to get the game to a ready place where they could reliably say it was stable enough to be played or "all clear".
Two YEARS and this was supposed to be a ready product when it launched.
Just saying, it could be worse lol
Both of these reviews are nail on the head accurate

The original game, sword of the stars is an amazing game, the sequel is just so bad Im amazed their dev house still exists

Tactical combat with singleplayer can freeze (since last version, if you use lot of fighters)
So, you can imagine the problems dev could have if they want to make multiplayer with tactical...
I just want to tell something :
If combat was turn based instead of real time, this problem should perhaps be fixed.

Except there are games that have done this before, so its not like it cant be done

I liked the turn based combat we had before. The pausable real time hybrid system might be okay if they could make it as interesting and in depth as the old system, but so far its a poor substitute.
