You can get completely different results. It depends on how you design your ships and how good you are at the tactical combat.

Unless you are certain of an easy victory don't trust the auto resolve, or you will take unnecessary loses. Now unfortunately we don't even have the option to take control if its a multiplayer game...,because somebody felt that was an extra frill rather than a basic requirement.
