The good news: Humans find a new Terran planet.

The bad news: We have no colony ship, no large transport vessels to transfer colonists, no resources in research front, little propulsion, our planetology tech sucks and still fighting amongst ourselves.

At this rate, we might get ninja'ed by any of the other races out there. :)

Eh not to rain on your parade, but there's far more requirements for a suitable planet... It's good to hope tho :)

The most important sentence: "Being in the habitable zone does not mean we know this planet is habitable. The temperature on the planet is strongly dependent on what kind of atmosphere the planet has,"

It's great how we find more and more planets, more and more in the habitable zones but as Battleship said, there are more requiements. Venus and Mars could also be habitable but it's prevented by things like toxic atmosphere, high temperature, lack of magnet field, low gravity and so on. So as promising as news like these sounds, we still need more informations but we are making progress.

for a planet for us (along with other life) to live on this planet needs:

a stable constant replenishing atmosphere (mostly CO2) along with some plant life to make O2 for us to breath.

a magnetic field that that can block the solar winds of its host star.

a planet able to redirect asteroids that can hit the planet with life on it.

a stable moon.

the planet also needs a tilt to have seasons.

among many other things. (yes im a space geek :p)

Well, I don't think you want a planet mostly consisting of CO2. Our atmosphere consists mostly of Nitrogen.^^ A planet to redirect asteroids is also questionable. I know it is often said that Jupiter defends us against asteroids but that's difficult to say. It's Most likely that it doesn't matter if there is a Jupiter or not. i didint say the planet needs mostly CO2, i said it needs to replenish its atmosphere with volcano's which gives allot of CO2.  . . (i should have explained more)

as for the Jupiter thing. it is still a mystery (like all other planets in our solar system :p) but i do remember one asteroid that was going to hit earth which had the potential to wipe all life on earth but Jupiter got in the way and smashed it into several peaces which all caused a blast slimier to a nuclear explosion when they hit Jupiter. . . i tried to find it but cant :(.

Regarding the CO2, ah now I understand :D

You're right that it is still a mystery wether or not Jupiter is a guardian, it seems the answer is both yes and no. Of course there are asteroids that are pulled by the gravtiational forces of the planet, which can lead to their break up or a flight right into it. Could it be that you think of Shoemaker Levy-9? Because I don't know of any other that hit the planet in our time that was observed. But Shoemaker Levy-9 was never on a direct course for earth and it's blast was more similar to 50 million Hiroshima bombs (even the Tsar bomb was just ca, 1.400 times the power of 1 Hiroshima bomb). But it is hard to compare, since the environment of Jupiter is totally different from Earth of course. It has also to be considered that Jupiter changes the courses of asteroids and that doesn't have to mean that they collide with Jupiter, it is just a possibility. Much time has yet to pass until we will truly understand how Jupiter presence affected the devlopment of life, Earth and the solar system as a whole.

I love these shows, I watch one right now. Here in Germany we have two channels that constantly show these. I hope that they will continue doing that, because before they constantly showed second world war and Hitler documentations which wasn't just boring but annoying as well. Space is far more interesting and gives a far better feeling. But of course they're still popular scientific so they can have flaws and be shallow. The documentation is a few years old, so maybe they didn't get the memo while in production but a comment like "without Jupiter we belief the impact rate would be a thousand times more..." is pretty specific. I don't know who "we" is and from where he get his information but the most recent research I know of is from Jonti Horner. As cool as the documentations are unfortunatly no one will ever look over them and cut out wrong informations.^^

i just didint add the volcano part which is what led to the confusion.
